Balance is key, my Fit Foodie friends. You need your gym days, but you need fun summer nights by the campfire, too. Whether you are heading to a lake or campsite, or simply firing up the backyard grill this weekend, here is a healthy twist on everyone’s favorite sweet summer treat: S’MORES.
There’s not much I can do to healthy-hack a marshmallow (made of gelatin, corn starch and sugar), but you can breathe a little easier knowing that one marshmallow or 10 mini-mallows have only about 25 calories. THIS DOES NOT GIVE YOU PERMISSION TO TAKE DOWN A BAG.
As for the chocolate, choose to upgrade from your typical Hershey’s Milk Chocolate with a quality dark chocolate bar of a 85% cacao content. Doing so will score you good-for-you antioxidants, flavonoids that keep you more satisfied and a buzz of dopamine (the “happy hormone”), with much less sugar and healthier fats.
You can stop there, or to make this the ultimate healthy s’more, we are losing the graham cracker. HOLD ON, DON’T RUN – graham crackers are in the family of processed foods, with more science lab jargon on its ingredient list than a bag of potato chips, including trans fats that your body can’t process.
Swap the Franken-food for Mother Nature’s bounty: instead of the cracker, sprinkle your mini-mallows and dark chocolate (in chips or chunks) onto a banana: split the peel in half to make it a banana “boat” and put the toppings inside with the fruit. Now wrap it in aluminum foil and toss on the grill …. OR if you’re feeling adventurous, put a stick in it (through the foil) and roast over a fire.
You can also top with almond butter or unsweetened shredded coconut. If you need the cracker crunch and taste, add cinnamon and chopped nuts or granola once the banana boat is hot off the fire.
If the banana boat is just too “bananas” for you, keep your cracker, but downsize. Use a smaller portion to satisfy your hankering for tradition.
